Background information of the company

Melik Seltei’s Farmers’ cooperative union was established and legally registered on June 1996 E.C, with registration no. ደክ/ሲ/ዩ-0831/1996 making its official address at Siltie Zone, Worabe town of SNNP Regional State.The initial objective of the union was to supply agricultural input and technology to its members at reasonable prices. But gradually, the union has diversified its services base which transformed its role to a higher stage. One of the services the union engaged in is agricultural output marketing that accommodated different commodities such as maize, wheat, teff, barley and etc.
The union has started its operation by 13 primarily farmers’ cooperatives of 3101 members and gradually increased to 82 primarily cooperatives with 99,526 members. The number of member primary cooperatives engaged in agricultural output marketing is also increasing every year. In the coming years; 86 primary cooperatives are expected to register with Melik union. The union is one of the unions in the region with good reputation in financial management and leadership qualities. On top of that, it is working within highly potential area of the region that enabled the union to deal with marketing of different high value Agricultural outputs that includes Wheat, teff & Maize.
The union purchases and markets the products of its members and also supply its memebers and non member smallholder farmers with different agricultural inputs (fertilizers, improved seed ,Animal feeds , Pestcides and herbicides), consumable industrial items (sugar and oil) , Mechanazation serivice (tractor, Combiner harvester ,planting, cater and shelre ) and construction materials for its members and the local communities at reasonable prices.
At its establishment, the capital of the union was 65,000 ETB, which has reached 75 million ETB as of the time of this business plan preparation. During its stay in the business operation, the number of member primary cooperatives, own capital, services offered and the profit generated, have tremendously increased. More importantly, the union has currently engaged in agro processing, Mechanization and capacity building of its member cooperatives.
